This made it obvious Blake felt no remorse and had no shame for what he had done. Blake's response was to laugh and ask Hooded Justice if that (meaning the violence of fighting/beating someone) is what he was into. It was clear that he fully intended on raping her and was about to when Hooded Justice, another of their Minute Men teammates suddenly entered the room, saw what was happening and immediately beat Blake until he was bloody sparing Sally from being raped. The Comedian began tearing away her clothing as he held her from behind and bent her over. She continued to resist him and received a brutal and terrifying beating from her fellow teammate. Instead of putting him off, this only made the Comedian even more determined to force himself upon her. After striking him with a quick, sharp right hook she told him no. As the rest of the team went on to their revelry, Sally excused herself to "powder her nose." She thought she was alone until her teammate, The Comedian (Edward Blake), appeared and attempted to kiss her. When the photographer was finished taking pictures the team decided to celebrate their official launch with a party. Sally was at the age of nineteen when she and the others Minute Men members posed together for there first team picture. Her jobs did not fulfill her ideas of grandeur so she donned a racy (for that era) yellow and black costume and became the stunning heroine known around the world as "the Silk Spectre." After a short solo stint as a crime-fighter, she met several other costumed heroes with whom she joined in becoming founding members of the superhero team known as "the Minute Men." It was during her time with the Minute Men when she employed an agent (who she would later marry) to help her rise to fame and glory and to help her capitalize on those qualities thus and thus use them to make money. Silk Spectre might be a fine hero, but her fixation on image wound up defining her legacy in Watchmen. The first Silk Spectre was Sally Juspeczyk (Sally Jupiter) a young woman at the age of eighteen who worked as a waitress and dancer. She micromanaged Laurie for years and pushed her daughter into becoming the second Silk Spectre, more obsessed with how it looked rather than how Laurie actually felt. Sally is someone who's all about image and showmanship, believing that's all anyone needs to be a hero. But Silk Spectre's staged heroism represents one of her biggest flaws. Most of Watchmen’s heroes don’t exactly fit the standard notion of superheroes, and to her own credit, she did grow into the role of a costumed adventurer. With that in mind, the question must be asked: What does this information do to Silk Spectre's legacy?Īdmittedly, Sally is the first to admit that she saw heroism as a springboard for better things. This additional material confirmed what Before Watchmen: Minutemen #1 presents and proves that Sally's entry into the life of crime-fighting was all a set-up. However, Moore did contribute to several RPG books that expanded Watchmen's canon, such as Watchmen: Taking Out the Trash and Watchmen Sourcebook. Now, there are fans who don’t take Watchmen’s sequels and other follow-up stories as canon, which is fair as none of them involved the original series’ writer Alan Moore. Though Schexnayder had to pay off the cops to keep quiet, the attention brought on by the stunts helped Sally's fame skyrocket in the press. Schexnayder would scout out high-end establishments like jewelry stores in dire need of publicity and stage fake robberies that Silk Spectre would 'bust'. Back when Sally was first trying to make it big, her manager and future husband, Laurence Schexnayder, came up with the perfect idea to get her noticed. After describing the effecient and brutal actions of the mysterious Hooded Justice, Mason lightens the mood by thinking back on Silk Spectre’s foray into the world of costumed adventuring. In Before Watchmen: Minutemen #1, Hollis Mason recounts the origins of the heroes that are destined to become the world’s first superhero team. However, while Sally Jupiter might have grown into a crime-fighter, her origins are misleading at best and an outright lie at worst.
